If technology is a woman: SheTech and AWS against the gender gap in STEM fields

An interview with Lucia Cavaciuti for #SheTechBreakfast. She is Account Manager for Digital Native & ISV at
Amazon Web Services
and was interviewed by
SheTech
to talk about a career in tech, inclusion and what it means to be a young woman in a professional world of (only) men

Who said the world of technology belongs to men alone? Women are making great strides, although there is still a long way to go.
In fact, in the technology sector, unfortunately, we cannot yet talk about gender equality. The representation of women in the various sectors of work and at the level of responsibility is still severely limited, discouraged and marginalized. Suffice it to say that according to the 2021 edition of the European Commission’sWomen in Digital Scoreboard

“, only 18% of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) specialists are women across Europe.

But it is always a study by the European Commission that gives us hope. Young Italians rank in the top three places in Europe for interest in science and computer science; In particular, a small share is felt for mathematics (41.7% compared to the European average of 37.6%) and computer science (49.2% compared to the European average of 42.2%). There are still many cultural barriers in a society where girls are convinced that there are still no equal job opportunities in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) field. Added to this are other factors, such as compliance with societal expectations, gender stereotypes, gender roles, and the lack of role models that guide girls’ career choices away from STEM backgrounds.

Bridging the gender gap in the world of technology, digital and entrepreneurship, through networking, empowerment and training activities, is the non-profit association SheTech , which contributes every day to the positive change in the world of work in STEM fields to make the professional environment increasingly meritocratic and inclusive, capable of connecting talents and creating new opportunities.

This is where the collaboration with
Amazon Web Services
comes from: we have started a collaboration with SheTech. Lucia Cavaciuti, Account Manager for Digital Native & ISV at AWS, was a guest on the new #SheTechBreakfast format to talk about what it means to be a woman in an all-male world and how to build a “female” career in tech.

With a degree in languages from the
Catholic University of Milan
, Lucia decided to focus on the world of Sales in the technological field. She returned to Italy after several experiences in London and Amsterdam. The topic of inclusion has always been very dear to her: at AWS she immediately decided to be part of the
Women@AWS
community, to be an active part of the theme. Getting out of his comfort zone has always been his favorite hobby.

“AWS has a great sensitivity to the issue of inclusion and diversity ,” says Lucia, “which is why Women@AWS was created with the aim of raising awareness among colleagues on the issue of the gender gap. There are various activities that we have organized, such as training on discriminating words that we use throughout our days without even realizing it.”
